Chinchillas

Charming Pets, Requiring Special Care

It's ironic but, we have the fur trade to thank for the availability of chinchillas for pets. The first pet chinchillas were actually those animals deemed unusable by the fur industry.

The chinchilla breeders have shared their broad wealth of knowledge on caring for these beautiful creatures and we thank them for that.

They are indiginous to the Andes mountains in South America. But, sadly, they are now somewhat rare in the wild with most of today's pet chins coming from farms and local breeders.

Wearing fur has thankfully become unfashionable and even more beautiful chinchillas have come into the pet marketplace. Wild chinchillas were gray but modern chinchillas can be found in gray, beige, ebony, white and variations in between.

At least one of the former fur industry breeders has put his knowledge into book form. Using his guidance along with additional research, PetChinnies.com strives to share basic care information for maintaining your pet's beautiful fur and their overall health and well-being.

We have no formal veterinary training and always suggest that when it comes to the health of your pets that you consult a vet trained in the care of small mammals and rodents.
